Overview / Job Description

The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is the Nation’s oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency. The missions of the Marshals Service include protection of the judiciary, court security, witness security, asset forfeiture, apprehension of fugitives, apprehending and prosecuting unregistered sex offenders, and prisoner transportation and custody.

Responsibilities

The incumbent serves as the Assistant Director providing executive leadership in the strategic planning, development, implementation, and operation of programs, policies and procedures that support the United States Marshals Service. They are responsible for the direction, management and oversight of broad, nation-wide law enforcement programs that may include ensuring the safety of the Federal Judiciary, court operations and facilities; apprehending fugitives and violent offenders under the jurisdiction of the United States Marshals Service, maintaining the security of key government witness and their families; guarding, transporting, and housing Federal prisoners; providing assistance in matters of Federal emergencies; accountability and internal review of United States Marshals Service operations and employee conduct; or developing and conducting training for the United States Marshals Service workforce. They will serve as the principal advisor to the United States Marshals Service leadership on program responsibilities; establishes strategic goals and objectives; adjusts or redefines goals and objectives and ensures resources are effectively utilizes; formulates broad policies and prescribes rules, regulations and procedure governing the execution of major law enforcement programs and activities; develops reliable sources of support from Federal agencies, state and local governments and private organizations; seeks to innovate and advance operations; oversees and directs negotiations of intergovernmental agreements and contracts; and proactively plans and projects for the effective management of Federal resources. The incumbent will serve as Assistant Director for one of the following Divisions:

  • Investigative Operations Division
  • Judicial Security Division
  • Office of Professional Responsibility
  • Prisoner Operations Division
  • Tactical Operations Division
  • Training Division
  • Witness Security Division
