Overview / Job Description

Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. Reviews and approves recommendations for functional programs. Provides guidance to subordinates to achieve goals in accordance with established policies. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel. Manages operations of contracts and grants office and professional staff.

Department Description

The Division of Hematology/Oncology is one of the largest Divisions in the Department of Medicine.  Currently, the Division has 78 full-time faculty, 29 ACGME and non-ACGME fellows, 28 post-doctoral fellows, 32 non faculty academics, 10 Affiliate MSP Physicians, and greater than 50 administrative and research staff.  The Division’s research, clinical and teaching functions are primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, although the faculty, fellows, and staff have appointments and clinical, research, and educational activities at ZSFG, and VAMC.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related area and six or more years of relevant experience, which includes five or more years of managerial experience and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • At least three to four years of progressively responsible financial management experience, or equivalent experience, encompassing financial management, strategic planning and organizational development, and human resource management.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate mutually beneficial agreements.
  • Knowledge of industry and grant funding best practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Service orientation, strong management skills, leadership, sound judgment and decision making, critical thinking and creative problem solving.
  • Demonstrated skills using common desktop / web applications; understanding of research enterprise databases.
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing to multiple constituencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage grant writing skills / development programs.
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals.
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and develop and maintain high standards of customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related area and equivalent experience / training.
  • In-depth knowledge of the organization’s operational, personnel, and financial transactions and systems related to administration of contracts and grants.
