About The Team

Student Wellbeing includes the Medical Centre, Centre for Student Development and Counselling (CSDC), Health Promotions, and Academic Accommodations. In Student Wellbeing, a comprehensive, holistic model of health is engaged to support students’ health and wellbeing. The Medical Centre provides health care services on campus including assessments, immunizations, physicals, and more. The CSDC offers free, confidential counselling services provided by a team of counsellors and counselling interns. Using a personalized care model, the team works with students to develop a personal wellbeing plan, and services offered include group and one-on-one care. Finally, Health Promotion shares health tips and strategies to students at Ryerson and runs the peer-to-peer Student Health and Resilience Program (SHARP), because healthy students make better learners.

The Opportunity

The Counsellor position enhances the student experience at Ryerson, and embodies Ryerson’s commitment to a Whole Campus Whole Health approach to student development, health, and wellness.

Counsellors engage in responsive program development and delivery aimed at fostering wellness and well-being in our diverse student population. This includes, but is not limited to working within a personalized and equitable care model of service delivery with a focus on providing single-session, brief therapy, and ongoing psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and community referrals.

Ryerson’s CSDC is seeking a Black-identified candidate, who demonstrates a deep understanding of the lived experiences of Black communities. This Counsellor will provide counselling services for all student populations with a specific focus on supporting Black-identified students in accordance with an anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed framework. cover letters.

Position Description

• Providing single-session appointments and brief therapy, with a focus on serving Black-identified student populations
• Providing individual and group counselling and psychotherapy to Black-identified students living with the impacts of racial trauma and mental health issues, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, social relationships, eating disorders, trauma, difficult family dynamics.
• Engaging in community building, program development, and campus-wide initiatives to support Black student wellness on campus.
• Providing consultative support to university faculty and staff around student mental health needs.

Relevant Experience

• Experience supporting equity-seeking clients and communities using an intersectional lens
• Practice that demonstrates sensitivity to the life experiences and needs of Black-identified and racialized students
• Lived experience of oppression, racism, homophobia, transphobia and/or

ableism will be an asset


• Successful completion of a Master’s degree in a counselling-related field with a minimum of 1 year training/experience in individual and group counselling, crisis intervention and program development.
• Registration with a Professional College governing the practice of psychotherapy in the province of Ontario.
• Client-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive approach to counselling
• Strong generalist counselling skills and ability to work with a diverse client population in a time-limited practice model.
• Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills to deliver counselling and crisis intervention services for students, including risk-assessment, crisis management, complex case management, outreach and referrals.
• Excellent interpersonal skills including demonstrable understanding of professional boundaries, roles and responsibilities; and strong collaboration and conflict resolution skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Functions independently and as part of multiple teams, working with other student services staff who deliver programs to Ryerson students.
• The counsellor will be required to effectively prioritize and ensure the completion of assigned work, to change priorities as the need arises, and to work efficiently.
Experience in the following areas would be considered an asset:
• Post-secondary setting counselling experience
• Experience in brief, single session and short-term counselling models
