Truck drivers are responsible for the operation of a tractor and trailer (24 to 53 feet in length) some with capacity upward of 30 tons to transport materials to and from specified destinations in a safe manner. Truck drivers are the eyes and ears of the company in many ways and have more customer interaction than most employees. The ability to maintain positive customer interactions is vital along with a commitment to safety and DOT regulations are crucial. The work of a driver is repetitive and structured with prescribed routes and routines that are largely consistent.
Duties include:
• Driving truck to destination in a safe and efficient manner.
• Completes pre-, intermittent, and post-trip inspection and checks the straps, breaks, tires, and lights.
• Compare the product on the truck with the paperwork.
• Delivering and off-loads material in accordance with route, paperwork, and desires of the customer.
• Collecting payment for goods delivered and for delivery charges.
• Maintaining truck log according to state and federal regulations.
• Maintaining telephone, radio, or electronic contact with supervisor to receive delivery instructions.
• Responsible for all truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
• Cleaning inside of truck and trailer.
• Contacting manager and/or necessary vendor to perform emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
• Responsible for electronic log to communicate status of orders and complications/errors and returning all completed paperwork to appropriate destination.
• Staying up-to-date and compliant with all DOT regulations including health cards and point system.
