Overview / Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Director, Business Development (Ontario), the Business Development Manager is accountable for leading the business development (BD) and strategic functions of the Litigation group in the Ontario Region.

The role works collaboratively with the firm-wide Business Development and Marketing teams. Core responsibilities include development and implementation of annual plans and budgets aligned with the firm-wide and broader Ontario Region strategies, assessing organizational affiliations and sponsorships and managing campaigns designed to support growth and expansion in the region.

Hours of work are from 9 am to 5 pm. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement.

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Works with the Ontario Litigation leadership team to develop and implement the business development strategy, annual action plans and budget in alignment with the firm-wide plan. Track, measure and report results of BD activities within the Ontario Region.
  • Conducts continuous research of the Ontario market and clients to identify growth opportunities within the group and related sub-groups, including monitoring legal actions across jurisdictions to keep current on active litigation.

Client Development

  • Identifies and manages key client activities, including maintaining a strong knowledge of clients, client business priorities, market and competitive forces and ensure key relationships are identified and integrated with firm programs.
  • Provides support to strategic RFP/ RFI /proposal /pitch opportunities, including working with the Proposal, Pricing & Innovation teams to develop innovative products.

Business Development

  • Maximizes the Region’s ability to secure new business by identifying and evaluating new business opportunities and targets, facilitating cross selling initiatives and mining campaign/event data for business development opportunities.
  • Works with marketing services to identify and develop strategies around conferences and event hosting and participation; assess and negotiate sponsorship requests; manage, implement and track targeted awareness campaigns to raise the firm’s profile.
  • Leads and implements the Ontario-related components of firm-wide initiatives as identified in the strategic plan, working with the firm-wide BD Manager.
  • Monitors Ontario litigation cases to capture and submit work experience from Ontario team members.
  • Assists with connecting practice groups to promote services to other firm members and participate in meetings with key Ontario region stakeholders to bring opportunities and awareness of to firm-wide teams.
  • Works with the firm-wide Business Development team and Regions to ensure a consistent and harmonious approach.
  • Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge and Experience

  • 7 years of experience in marketing or professional services business development is essential. A strong preference for candidates with an understanding of litigation practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, and/or MBA preferred.
  • Experience working in large/matrix organizations, managing multiple stakeholder requirements.
  • Expert knowledge of core marketing principles including driving innovative tools and programs, competitive intelligence, market research, and pitch and RFP.
